This is an early morning picture of Barbados’ long stretch of white sand beaches as viewed from the balcony of my ocean front room at Grand Barbados Beach Resort Hotel. Before I went to bed for the night, I could not resist the strong impulse telling me to open the sliding door adjoining my room to the balcony. Perhaps to get rid from the apparently non-natural air coming from the air-conditioning system partly was the reason. Eventually I uncovered the real cause when the cool fresh air blowing from the ocean and the sound of the waves dose me off to achieve a quiet deep sleep.
I first heard about Barbados several years ago when one of my instructors in the maritime school who is an international seafarer himself mentioned it in the class. Even to these days, I can still recall how he pictured this island country in the easternmost of the Caribbean islands as a superb holiday destination. Back then, I was thinking and wishing if by any chance I can get there as well.
Bridgetown is the capital of Barbados and is the country’s commercial capital. It is situated in the southwestern part of the island and is where the main sea port and airport are to be found. Few of the city’s landmarks include the Trafalgar Square; 18th century Anglican Cathedral; historic Careenage, a ship repair yard; and Garrison Savannah, a former parade ground where international cricket matches and other sports events are held.
On November 4th of this year, my wish several years ago came to reality. Aboard a British Airways flight all the way from UK, my hope of setting foot to this beautiful island of Barbados eventually finds its way. It was an 8-hour long flight from Gatwick International Airport in UK but it seems I was neither travelling that far nor did my body clock was beaten down by the very common and ever-present travel nuisance - jet lag. Air traveling across different time zones had been always more often than not caused me some sort of disorientation and sleepiness every time I reached my destination. But my flight recently was extremely superb. I don’t know why it went so well but it’s just what I felt.
I believe I am precisely correct to say that the warm tropical climate in the Philippines is exactly the same in Barbados. So it only means that when I packed my luggage back home without those bulky winter jacket or winter suits didn’t cost me any penny, and that’s great to know…LOL…
