Basilica of St. Nino in Cebu PDF Print E-mail

It’s been a few years back since I last visited Basilica del Santo Nino, one of the oldest churches in the Philippines located in downtown Metro Cebu. This baroque style church made from hard stone was constructed on the same spot where the sculpture image depicting Jesus as a Black Holy Child was found during the Spanish rule in 1565. I found no changes inside except the area on the left side of the cathedral where people used to lit candles and offer some prayers was not anymore on the place I know.

Basilica del Santo Nino is the home of the miraculous Santo Nino, the patron saint of Cebu. The feast of Santo Nino or the “Sinulog Festival” occurs every third Sunday of January and is the most celebrated yearly festival of the island with visitors coming from all over the Philippines as well as tourists from other countries to witness the event. When I took my family for a vacation to Cebu last May, to visit the church and pay homage to the patron saint topped the list of the itinerary I made prior getting over there. About ten years ago, it was just myself visiting the church but about 5 months ago I came into the church with a wife and four kids. See how “productive” I am!!! …LOL…
