Nuku Hiva is the largest island of the Marquesas Archipelago. It is located about 800 nautical miles northeast of Tahiti. Nuku Hiva has an airport built at the west side of the island. The island of Nuku Hiva was the site for Survivor: Marquesas, the fourth installment of the popular CBS reality television show. The beautiful and peaceful village of Taiohae is the administrative capital of Nuku Hiva where government offices, shops, a post office, hospital, banks and schools are located.
The M/S Paul Gauguin normally anchored in the tranquil water of the sheltered bay of Taiohae. Rocky mountains overlooking the bay of Taiohae offer a breathtaking view from the ship. Seafront roads of Taiohae stretching around the island of Nuku Hiva as well as the winding road going up to the mountains are well maintained. With a mountain bike, I once attempted to go up to the mountain trailing along the steep track up. But barely halfway up to the mountain, I drew back; I was not prepared to take the challenge yet. Perhaps on foot, I can successfully go up to the peak. I am planning to get on that pursuit but not at the moment.
The island of Nuku Hiva has several interesting spots for visitors to set eyes on. Passengers can go for an exploration adventure of the island or simply enjoy quality moment of leisure walking around the village. For souvenir items exclusively from this remote island of the south pacific, handicrafts creatively handcrafted by the islands inhabitants are displayed at the pier or along the sides of the road.
The tranquility of the village of Taiohae as well as whole of the island in general is definitely the precise place for individual who want to spend solitary moments to appreciate life and nature. Large portion of the island remains untouched and the beauty of nature remained as it was. Situated on the hilly side of the mountain and overlooking the bay of Taiohae is the Nuku Hiva Pearl Resort. The resort is well noted for its uniquely designed bungalow accommodations constructed of wood, bamboo and grass roof materials. It is beyond doubt an amazing place to stay while in the island. The island is updated with the latest breakthrough in technology especially in the field of communication. Satellite cable TVs, phones and internet are available there too.
The people of Nuku Hiva exceedingly live in harmony with nature. They have abundant supply of fish as well as agricultural and meat products. The tropical climate of the place supplemented with sufficient amount of rainfalls enables the place to grow vegetation on its fertile soil. Coconut, fruits and vegetables are grown abundantly throughout the island. The island has adequate pasture for herds of goats to graze on too. As a matter of fact, fresh fish, vegetables and fruits are supplied to the ship’s provision whenever M/S Paul Gauguin calls to Nuku Hiva. The people of Nuku Hiva live a simple and quiet life. Life in the island moves at a very relaxing pace more than enough to appreciate the wonder of nature.
