Ulriken is one of the seven mountains surrounding Bergen. At approximately 2,150 feet or 643 meters high, definitely it is the tallest. If you are standing in the city center of Bergen, that mountain with TV mast on the top is Mount Ulriken. From the lower station which is situated at the base of the mountain, we already have a good view of Mount Ulriken. So we are so lucky because there can be many days with no view from the viewpoint of Mount Ulriken as cloud formation covered the top for many weeks.
Here is a simple joke from the tour guide, “In Bergen people usually say that if the top of Mount Ulriken is visible, it means that it will rain but if you can’t see it, it means that it already rains”…LOL…
Mount Ulriken can be reached in two ways – by cable car and by foot. I only suggest hiking for the physically fit as the hike up is very steep. At the lower station, we boarded a cable car for about 5-minute journey up to the precipitous cliff to the top of the mountain. Once we reached the summit, we had a magnificent panoramic view of Bergen, the islands, the fjord, the countryside and the other mountains.
There is a restaurant and a souvenir shop at the summit of Mount Ulriken. Complimentary coffee, tea and cinnamon bread are offered to visitors at the restaurant or you can order food from the menu of course for a fee. At the souvenir shop, visitors can buy t-shirts and other souvenir items related to Mount Ulriken.
The best and safest way to view Bergen is at the sky terrace overlooking Bergen but anybody can also take the other way but going there can be muddy and one has to set foot over the big stones which can be slippery especially when wet in order to view Bergen down below.
Other than enjoying the beautiful view of Bergen from the viewpoint at Mount Ulriken, athletic visitors can also enjoy mountain walks or GPS hiking in 10 prepared routes, climbing and paragliding to name a few.
