This is the greenhouse of Akureyri Botanical Park. Access of visitors to the garden’s greenhouse is always open to the public during working hours. It is a nursery for flowers, perennials, trees and shrubs.
From Godafoss, we visited the park before the coach took us back to the ship. The 3.5 hectare park lies at an altitude of 40 to 50 meters above sea level and is just close to the town center as well. The park is the oldest botanic garden in Iceland and is one of the northernmost botanic gardens in the world. Most of the species cultivated here have their origin in the Arctic or in the temperate zones and also in high mountains all over the world.
For Akureyri’s local inhabitants and visiting tourists, the garden is an important place for recreation. Aside from Akureyri Botanical Park’s participation in seed exchange programs, the garden is also a gene bank for hardy plants sustainable in the region’s climate.
