My visit to the scenic winery region in northern Spain was not just about visiting a well preserved medieval village surrounded by vineyards but a visit to one of Spain’s most renowned producer of traditional wine – the El Fabulista winery. When most wineries adapt to modern tools in wine making, El Fabulista winery is an exception to that because El Fabulista produced a trademark of high quality wines in traditional way where grapes are still crushed with the feet. El Fabulista’s traditional art in wine making perfection resulted to a wine with a bright, vivid color, fine aroma and very pleasant taste.

El Fabulista Wine Tasting Vault: April 13, 2010.

El Fabulista wines are marketed under the brand names of ‘Decidido’, ‘Fabula’, and ‘Bodega El Fabulista’. Fortunately, I made a last minute decision to buy two bottles of El Fabulista wine before the tour bus was about to left the place. Unfortunately I could not add more bottles of these finest wines now since El Fabulista only market their traditional wines locally.

Tunnel leading to the interconnected vaults: April 13, 2010.

El Fabulista is situated in Laguardia, a town famed for over 300 underground wineries. For a thousand years, Laguardia holds a legacy in vine-growing and winemaking. Concealed 7 meters below a 17th century mansion of the Santiago family, the winery features three parallel and interconnected vaults underground. The first vault is for the processing of wine, next to it is the vault where hundreds of wooden barrels of wine stored for aging and the third vault serves as wine tasting area.
El Fabulista’s medieval underground winery is open for visits daily. An in-house tour guide will explain the history of the wine and some facts and history about the mansion. Then a thorough explanation in the wine making process will follow before entering the narrow passageway down to where the three vaults underground are located. The tour would approximately last for about an hour but it may go well beyond that time duration. During the tour you would have the chance of a lifetime experience to sample two of El Fabulista’s best produced wines. The tour guide is Spanish of course but no worries, the tour guide is very fluent in English as well.

Due to the limited number of visitors the winery can accommodate on a single tour, it is always a good idea to make an appointment beforehand. El Fabulista can be reached at:
