Hiva Oa is the burial place of Paul Gauguin and Jacques Brel. Paul Gauguin was a French painter who died in 1903 and Jacques Brel, a well-known Belgian French-speaking singer, songwriter and an actor, who died in 1978.
Both Paul Gauguin and Jacques Brel had lived in Hiva Oa and both of them were captivated by the peaceful and simple way of life in the Marquesas. Their tombs are among the most visited sites of the island. In memory of these two famous artists, a museum dedicated to them had been built – The Paul Gauguin Cultural Center and Espace Jacques Brel. They were both buried in Calvart Cemetery in Atuona, Hiva Oa. The cemetery is situated on the hill overlooking the village and the bay of Atuona. It took about 10 minutes to get there on the “Le Truck”, an open air free shuttle service bus for guests and crew.
