Where on earth in this present day world where people don’t have to start worrying with regards to food? Obviously, one would think that this is a stupid question. But I can prove to everyone that this question is not silly at all. I am just putting into a standpoint the simplicity of life of this island here in the South Pacific.
During one of the M/S Paul Gauguin’s calls to the island of Huahine, French Polynesia, I discovered something that in some ways a totally interesting one. While in some parts of this planet millions of people are in dire need of food assistance, here in this island, locals are abundantly supplied with its rich marine resources. In some places, like for instance in Philippines particularly to my home town, fishermen have to go out to sea in order to catch fish. But here in Huahine, I did not see even a single boat fishing out to the open sea because probably they can get enough fish even on its waterfront. I was at the shore team when the ship was in Huahine during this cruise. At the pier where the ship’s tender dropped off the passengers, fishing net was set up at the other corner of the pier by some locals of the island. Within just a matter of around 30 minutes, the locals managed to fetch in four medium sized buckets of fish. These locals are neither doing this for business nor for fun but merely for their own consumption because right after dividing equally their catch, they put their fish filled bucket at the back of their cars and proceed home. The inset photo here shows the locals harvesting the fish that were caught in the net. Obviously, the people here are not bothered with the rising costs of basic commodities, though they are still affected anyhow but at least to a lesser extent.
