Europe

Europe is one of the world's seven continents. Comprising the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, Europe is generally divided from Asia to its east by the watershed divides of the Ural and Caucasus Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian and Black Seas, and the waterways connecting the Black and Aegean Seas. Europe is bordered by the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Black Sea and connected waterways to the southeast. Yet the borders of Europe—a concept dating back to classical antiquity—are somewhat arbitrary, as the primarily physiographic term "continent" can incorporate cultural and political elements.

25th of April Bridge on April 7, 2010

The photo above was taken as the ship passed one of Europe’s largest bridges, 25th of April Bridge in a fine early morning in an exceptionally fine harbour of Lisbon, the main sea port of Portugal. Two cruise ships arrived the port at the same time and these were the M/S Black Watch and M/S Ventura.

At age 10, my curiosity exhorted me for my very first taste of wine. I know it’s against parental rules to taste that stuff at that very young age. But as always, curiosity is always a powerful gizmo to do the unlikable. Anyway, neither my grandma nor my grandpa knew about it…LOL… Now that I am grown up (or older…arghhh…it hurts…), my curiosity again pushed me to do more than just tasting or I think this time let me call it “drinking”. I am so eager not just to know how wine is produced but to see a wine cellar where some of the world’s finest wines are stored to age properly. Since aging significantly affects the flavors and aromas present in wines, every wine makers developed their own way in doing this crucial stage in wine making. Driving out of Helsinki through the picturesque countryside where Ainola, the former home of the world famous composer Jean Sibelius and his family is located. Ainola was named after his wife Aino. Sibelius built his house in 1904, on a pine-clad hill near Lake Tuusula approximately 30 kilometers from the city. The site has a spacious view over fields to the lake beyond. This is the exact place that Sibelius needed so he could concentrate on his music – a peaceful and quiet surrounding away from the diversion of the city.

By the time the coach arrived at the Acropolis, the ancient sanctuary was already packed with tourists. Well, that is what I expected even before we left the cruise terminal as another very large cruise ship was also visiting the port of Piraeus on that same day. I was standing just in font of the Propylaia or the Monumetal Gates of the Acropolis when I took this beautiful picture of the Athena Nike Temple.

Alesund, Norway on June 27, 2010

Black Watch arrived at the port of Alesund on a Sunday, so everything were closed. I did not get off from the ship and to make the most of that lazy Sunday, I decided to spend the whole time sleeping. It’s Sunday, so there is no overtime but of course I got to wake up for my regular watch.
