A jail or detention center from the past, now a present day hub for tourists. This is Casa Da Cultura, a mandatory stop for all tourists arriving or visiting Recife (this explains why Casa Da Cultura is the pick up and drop off point for the complimentary shuttle buses to and from the ship). Recife is a seaport and one of Brazil’s biggest cities. Because of its plenty waterways, Recife is also dubbed as the Venice of America. Casa Da Cultura exhibits huge variety of locally produced arts and crafts coming from different municipalities of Recife. This includes pottery and figurative ceramic arts, sacred images made from clay and wooden carvings, leather items, cotton clothing, blankets, cushions, curtains, embroidered shirts, sarongs, sandals, paintings and a lot more. This is the best place for tourists to look and bring home genuine memory of Recife. Casa Da Cultura is also the venue for cultural activities and recitals.

The background of Casa Da Cultura is as historical as Recife itself. Originally or before Casa Da Cultura became what it is today, the building was for 118 years served as a detention center in Recife. Though the building went through considerable refurbishments, the old prison cells remained and looked exactly as it was before the prisoners were moved. Now these prison cells were transformed to craft shops, bookstores and food courts serving typical and local cuisines. Casa Da Cultura is also fitted with an internet café, a museum, an amphitheater and three panoramic elevators.
