Inmates behind the steel bars at Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center became popular in 2007 when a video of their "Thriller" dance attracted millions of visitors in YouTube. Following the sudden death of Michael Jackson, the inmates performed another behind-bar presentation as tribute to their idol, Michael Jackson. The performance was watched by hundreds of locals from Cebu as well as foreign tourists. The advantage that this show has given to the inmates in return, is that it helps them develop self-esteem and that is a must-have thing the inmates should have once they left the jail (in some case) and back to the free world.
Words from the inmates (excerpted from The Seattle Times):
- "I felt sad because we lost our idol," - inmate Wenjiel Resane, who plays the role of Jackson's girlfriend in the video.
- "I was sad because one of the songs of Michael Jackson, `Thriller,' made us famous around the world," inmate Francis Mercader, 36, who has spent a year in detention while on trial for drug charges.
- “Jackson inspired us, so we are all sad about his death,” – inmate Alfredo Gaballo, 52
